The 2000 Classical World Chess Championship match was contested between reigning champion Garry Kasparov and challenger Vladimir Kramnik in London from 8 October to 4 November. Kramnik won 2 games, drew 13 and lost none, becoming the 14th classical world champion (under the BrainGames / Professional Chess Association line). Kasparov was unable to break Kramnik’s "Berlin Wall" — the Berlin Defence of the Ruy Lopez — with the white pieces.
